ALTHOUGH Gisele was gone, Edward hadn’t fallen to rest.

He was too worked up.

His breathing quickened as the memory of her hands, her mouth sketched over his body. After the first few years of giving in to the indulgences of vampirism, he’d spent a long, long time shedding his blood instincts and refusing to revel in them. So he’d forgotten.

Forgotten the heights he could scale, forgotten the depths he could hit.

Experiencing them tonight had reminded him that he could become a thing like Fegan…or maybe even like his human father: a self-involved, unapologetic ass who had taken great satisfaction in gluttony and excess. Unfortunately, blood was not the only sustenance derived from a bite; Edward pulled sexual power from it, too, so sipping from a blood-bank packet or drinking from an animal had never satisfied him for more than a short time.

However, survival or not, every time Edward robbed a victim of blood meant he moved a step toward that point of no return and away from a state of grace.

And he had really put some distance between him and that state tonight.

Regretful rage burned low in his belly, like a flame that never went out. When he thought of Gisele kissing and caressing him, the anger stoked him as he had never been stoked before.

Why her? he thought.

Soon, he heard a disturbance down below. Gisele? Or Sam? Without these silver chains his senses might’ve detected an identity.

Still, he hoped it would be Sam since Edward would’ve preferred his former gang member’s derision instead of his captor’s attentions.

Soon enough he had his answer when Gisele came through the door, and he tried to tell himself he was not happy with the outcome.

He tried very hard.

While she thumped a bundle of newspapers onto the makeshift bed, he took in the sleeveless cigarette-slim dress she was wearing. It occurred to him that he preferred her without clothing.

Defending against those thoughts, he decided to show her that he was entirely comfortable the way she’d left him, stripped and supposedly vulnerable. But when she swept a saucy glance over his nakedness, he wondered if his tactic was all that effective.

She retrieved one of the newspaper sections from the floor and brought it over to him. When he failed to take it, she set the reading material over his lap.

“I thought you might like some brain food,” she said.

He didn’t remark on how her graceful, feline movements testified to a recovery from the slight silver poisoning he’d noted before she’d left. Instead, he glanced at the paper’s headlines.

Corruption in politics. Violence.

“Yes,” he said, “humans are not as perfect as we are. Or perhaps I have that turned around?”

She shrugged, but he knew full well that Gisele had insinuated herself inside his head during their physical bout, nestling into him until he’d allowed her to witness a couple of fleeting doubts regarding the quest for his humanity. Of course she was going to pounce on that, no matter how negligible those thoughts had been.
